Martin Roness, a student from Norway, shares his story of pursuing his dream to study in the United States. From childhood fascinations with American culture to navigating the college application process with help from ACN, Martin reflects on the challenges, decisions, and excitement leading up to his move to the University of North Dakota to study Business Management

Hello there, my name is Martin Roness. I come from a town in Norway called Ski, just south of Oslo. For a few years now, it has been my dream to study abroad in the United States. I have been fascinated by the United States for as long as I can remember, and there were plenty of things from my childhood that were American in some way shape or form, like Disney and Pixar movies, as well as some other stuff. And after going there for a vacation in 2019 and a study trip in 2023, it only solidified my interest and fascination with the country. A couple of years ago, I discovered ACN while attending an educational fair in Oslo, and after learning more about the school, I decided to apply.

Personally, I see this as a golden opportunity for me to study abroad in the United States. I get to finish my bachelor’s degree in the United States and build a network of connections for the future, which I think is very useful for anyone. I also think it’s a good thing for my own personal growth to get out of Norway for a little while and see more of the world. After all, I get to see another part of the United States that I haven’t seen before, and I will be able to see more of the States when I find the time to travel. Despite the current political situation which is pretty worrying for a lot of people, I am not changing my course and I won’t let it stop me from trying to get across the pond. I’ve been wanting to do this for so long now, and I’m not going to give up that easily. I initially thought that most people would be against it when I first announced that I was going to study abroad in the United States, but most of the people in my circle have actually been pretty supportive of my decision.

Ever since I started attending ACN, I have gotten a lot of help from the school's student advisor (Heidi) on the process of applying for college in the United States. I wasn’t entirely aware of the whole process, but I feel like I have gotten the help that I needed. One important thing to add though, is that nothing happened on it’s own, I had to take the action required, and I also had to ask a lot of questions. That wasn’t a problem though, as the advisor was always happy to answer my questions and help me find solutions to my problem. One thing that is important to remember as a student is to never be afraid to ask questions. I also got a bit of help with deciding on what university I wanted to attend. At first I thought that University of North Dakota (UND) was the best choice for me, but I was also open to other schools like West Chester University of Pennsylvania and Augsburg university in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Then I found out that I wanted to study in Florida or Colorado, but eventually came to the conclusion that I should go for UND. The reason I decided to go with UND is that ACN’s partnership with UND allows me to pay in-state tuition like the citizens of North Dakota. If I was going to apply to another university that didn’t have a partnership with ACN, I would have to pay the much more expensive international student tuition. UND is also a much bigger university than the other partner schools I was considering. States like California and New York haven’t really been on my radar all that much, considering the high tuition costs for colleges in those states. The school’s workload has also helped me get more disciplined when it comes to schoolwork, which is a good thing that will be useful when I study in the States as I will very likely be busy with all the school tasks there.

When I start attending UND, I will study for my bachelor’s degree with a major in Business Management. I was originally going to study Business administration, but after a reading mistake on my part and realizing that the degree wasn’t available at UND, I decided to choose business management instead. When I first realized that I wanted to study, I was already determined to study something related to business. In fact, I realized this before I figured out where I wanted to study. The reason that I wanted to study business is because it offers a lot of job opportunities in the future. And who knows, maybe I will take a masters degree after I’m done with my bachelor’s degree. I haven’t decided on that yet, but time will tell. I have had a good time while attending ACN, where I have made many new friends and connections, in just one school year. I am looking forward to studying in the states and to meeting new people while I’m there. If you want to study abroad in the United States as well, then I think you should apply for ACN right away.
