Lucas spent Summer 2026 at the American College of Norway, studying, meeting new people, exploring Oslo, and traveling. Read about his adventure and see photos here!

Moving to Norway was surreal! I went into it not knowing how it would differ from my everyday life. I had only been abroad once before but that was just a short trip where I didn't stay in one place for long. With this experience I was able to immerse myself in the community because I was living in a smaller town that wasn't really a place you would find tourists. One thing that really stood out to me was how many city events took place. I was always able to get out of my dorm and find things to do that were only a five-minute walk away.

I picked ACN because of how the school operates mostly. I had known that I wanted to Study Abroad in Norway and ACN has a great duration and timeframe during the summer. The classes also only run from Monday to Thursday, which gave me plenty of time to explore and plan trips over the three-day weekends. Now that I've been to ACN I can also say the staff at ACN is incredible and made it very easy for me to navigate school and life in a different country.

My favorite part about ACN was the class trips we took. The staff took us all around to different unique places in Oslo and I probably wouldn't have known about those places without the trips.

While I was abroad, I got to travel to places both in Norway and in countries surrounding it! I went to countries like Denmark, Sweden, and even Germany. For places in Norway though I went to this town called Tønsberg and it was probably my favorite place I went over my whole time in the country. If you are at all interested in Medieval or Viking topics then you have to check out Tønsberg. There, I was able to see real Viking Ships, old medieval artifacts, and even castle ruins. The town is only about a one-hour trip from the dorms, so it was a perfect day trip.

For any future students, I highly recommend that you get out of the dorms and find out what is going on around Moss. You can learn so much about Norway just from participating in events around the city. Check ACN's social media while you are there because they are constantly posting activities from around Norway that you can attend. Make sure you take at least one weekend to travel to a country other than Norway. You are already abroad and travel elsewhere is easier than it will ever be in America. Also, make sure you check out the cinema in Moss! They have Norwegian films and big blockbuster movies while also just being an awesome theater.

What happens after ACN for me? I want to finish my main education here at the University of North Dakota. Somewhere down the line I want to study abroad again whether it's in Norway or not, but I can definitely see a future where I end up in Norway again.
