The American College of Norway Made My American Dream a Reality

Norwegian student, Benjamin Hannus (far right) reflects on his year at the American College of Norway and offers great insight into how the program can help students achieve their goal of studying in the U.S.

Ever since I was a child, studying in the U.S. has always been something I wanted to do. When I was growing up, my family encouraged me to travel and meet people from different backgrounds and this really contributed to my interest in studying abroad. How I was going to do this, I had no idea because I knew that the actual process was much more complicated than studying in the Norwegian system. Luckily, after a few meetings with my high school advisor, we came across the American College of Norway (ACN) and it was through ACN that I would receive guidance and support to help me achieve my goal of studying in the U.S.

At ACN, I could not only start my U.S. bachelor’s degree, but also start the process of applying to other universities in the United States. Additionally, the classes offered are U.S. university courses taught by American instructors. Because the courses offered at ACN are American courses, you get a good introduction to what American lectures are like. The classes sizes at ACN are small and this is a great benefit because you get to really know your classmates and instructors and receive personal, one-on-one support. Furthermore, at ACN I spent a lot of time with my advisor. During our meetings we talked about the schools I was interested in, looked at the majors and minors they offered, plus we mapped out the courses I would have to take at my future university.

After a year of research and assistance, I am have officially decided on attending ACN’s partner school, the University of North Dakota (UND)! Being a partner school, UND offers a great support system as well as affordable tuition. Additionally, UND has a world-class Aerospace Program! This solidified the deal for me as I will be pursuing a degree in Air Traffic Control.

From helping with adjusting to the American university system to applying to schools in the U.S., I would highly recommend ACN for the simple fact that they help make everything easier for you. The staff members at ACN are also a great benefit to the program. They work hard to create an exciting and fun campus for all students. Moreover, at ACN I have become friends with students from all over Norway and the U.S. Many of them will also be coming to UND with me this fall. The support system I created at ACN is something that can’t be replicated anywhere else!

If you want to study in the U.S. but thought the process to getting there was too difficult, I’d highly recommend starting your U.S. bachelor’s degree at the American College of Norway. I’m forever grateful for the all the experiences and help I got during my time at ACN.
