Courses:
Human Rights in the Middle East: (3 credits) This course will examine human rights issues as they have evolved in Iraq, Iran, and in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict along with global responses to these situations. With a special emphasis on the treatment and rights of women in these countries, the course will focus on the social history, the political upheavals that have exacerbated human rights abuses in these pivotal areas. We will study the current state of affairs in each area and determine what local, regional, and global strategies are being applied to alleviate these situations. The course will rely heavily on current information and will make extensive use of online resources. Discussion, debate, reading, and writing will be heavily utilized.

Environmental Challenges of the Twenty First Century: (3 credits) This course will examine the major environmental challenges facing the sustainability of future generations. Topics will include (but are not limited to) global climate change, food production (especially the role of genetically modified organisms), availability of clean water, preservation of biodiversity and natural habitat, renewable energies, and environmental pollutants. Reading, writing, and discussion of pertinent topics will be employed throughout the course.
